Five Teachers to be Named “San Diego County Teachers of the Year” at 32nd annual “Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers” on Aug. 26

 

"I touch the future. I teach.” That’s how social studies teacher and astronaut Christa McAuliffe once explained why she chose a career in education.

 

Teachers have many reasons for why they teach but they all have one common denominator—what they do in their classrooms impacts the world. To say their jobs are important is a drastic understatement. That’s why the San Diego County Office of Education teams up with Cox Communications and longstanding title sponsor San Diego County Credit Union every year for “Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers," brought to you by San Diego County Credit Union.

Food Network personality and San Diego Magazine owner Troy Johnson, who grew up in Poway, returns as this year’s host. 

 

The annual event, which began in 1990 and is televised by Cox as a public “thank you” to local educators, celebrates the county’s 24,000-plus public school teachers. Supporting local education is an important part of the legacy left behind by Cox Communications’ founder James M. Cox, who was a teacher early in his career.

“Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers” is a special evening taking place on Friday, Aug. 26 that includes student performances, inspiring stories and recognition of the county’s 40 local teachers chosen by their districts as “Teacher of the Year” and who are also nominees for 2022-23 San Diego County Teacher of the Year. Five nominees will be named a County Teacher of the Year at the end of the night. They’re selected based on student achievement, professional development, and school community involvement, among other criteria.

 

“Salute to Teachers is one of the most exciting and important events of the year because it’s an opportunity to honor the extraordinary efforts of San Diego County teachers,” said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. “We are thrilled to once again partner with Cox Communications and San Diego County Credit Union to celebrate teachers and highlight the indelible impacts they have on students across the county.”

 

The announcement of the five teachers of the year will be one of the many highlights from the evening that will air at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2 as a one-hour television special produced by Cox Communications’ YurView Network (Cox Channel 4).
